The co-worker who cried Wolf

Okay, so I have this co worker. And I like this person, but lately they have been really getting on my nerves.

Over the past year, I’ve been told many, many things by this person, things that get me all excited or nervous or upset, and then they never, ever happen. It’s like a cruel, year long April Fool’s joke.

Examples:

“Oh definitely! You are totally getting the job promotion – I heard so-and-so talking about it.
It’s been at least 9 months, and nope…

“Yep, I heard from so-and-so who sits next to the president’s financial guy in grad classes, that layoffs are coming this week”
You've been telling me that for the past 3 weeks...

“Don’t tell anyone, but my boss told me you were getting a raise.”
Ha! Nope...

“The doctor you are working for is getting fired, and he won’t be back Monday!”
Oh really, then why is it 6 months later, and he is across the hall sending me an email right this minute?

And So. Many. More.

It’s really hard to just ignore this person, because they always seem to have a really credible source. And when someone tells you that you are getting a raise, or possibly fired, its really hard to not think about the possibilities even if you don’t really trust the source. It’s like this person really loves the attention they get from having the “inside scoop” - even though it has always been wrong – that never phases this person.

Do any of you have toxic co-workers??

Oh that is not cool! I'm sorry you have to listen to that! I am currently looking for a job and at this point, I would take your coworker anytime! I just wouldn't give them the satisfaction of knowing that you are interested in what they are telling you. Just listen but don't show increased interest in the subject. If you show them that it's just rolling off your back, maybe they will stop.

I can't stand co-workers like that. I use to have a co-worker like that and it drove me crazy. Just listen but don't let her know that what she says effects you.

BTW.. Just came across your blog and love it!!

Gah! Yes I do! But don't get me started on it. I have a serious tolerate/hate relationship with one. Just tune them out girl!

How FUN! We are like newlywed twins... ha ha.

Thanks for stopping by - this blog totally made me laugh. I don't have a toxic co-worker, but I do know someone like that. It's SO irritating!! To the point where I'll go to pass the info along to McStudly and he's like "I don't buy it - they're always lying. Why do ou even give them the time of day?" and I actually make excuses for this person. It's NUTS!

Sarah,

I have been working since 1981, and there are ALWAYS people who claim to know stuff, and have an "inside source". It never seems to pan out. Keep your head down, work hard, please your bosses (we often have more than one), smile and roll with the punches...
